Promoting True Body Acceptance

Body image is the perception that a person has of their physical self and the thoughts and feelings that result from that perception. These feelings can be positive, negative or both, and are influenced by individual and environmental factors.
Body image disturbance includes feelings of shame, anxiety, and self-consciousness about one’s body and/or appearance and is a precursor and symptom of eating disorders – the deadliest of mental health conditions. Body image negatively affects self-esteem and the ways to arm or equip oneself from progressing into a negative body image is presented in this program.
4yourBody presents education, engagement, and empowerment through lessons, videos, discussions and activities that offer practice in embracing their individual value, talents, uniqueness for true body acceptance.

There is a pervasive belief in our culture that negative body talk is acceptable. This behavior encourages us to place a high value on appearance by stereotyping an “ideal person” based on race, culture, interests and socioeconomic background and by stigmatizing the weight of those who do not fit the ‘Appearance Ideal.’
We know that by spreading the message to young teens, their families, and the community, about celebrating their unique talents and abilities, and teaching how to Change the Conversation away from body talk, we will help them gain the skills to develop a true body acceptance and a healthy self-esteem. This will empower them today and in the future.
